We saw a family of White-winged Chough a while ago. We don't see many around our area. These ones were beside the road at Widgee west of Gympie. Although they look similar to Crows and Currawongs in appearance, they belong to a different family, the only other member being the Apostlebird. They are mud nest builders.
White-winged Chough (Corcorax whiteae)
Not sure what is wrong with the one on the right, but it looks like it has been attacked and has an injury to it's head.
For more birds visit Wild Bird Wednesday.
Nice photos and that's another bird I haven't seen yet!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, Nice to study the details!
ReplyDeleteIt does remind me of our crows. The white stripe gives some interest to the otherwise overall blackness of the feathers which is nice.
ReplyDeleteLooks like quite an injury to the one. Hope it made it.
Nice shots Neil!
The wing stripe is a bit similar to our red winged blackbirds before they spread their wings and the red actually shows up.
ReplyDeleteThese birds look very large!! Are they? Hope the injury isn't too serious.
BAD 'Hair' DAY
I'd only seen my first choughs at Gloucester recently ..
ReplyDeleteA peak of white. Nature is so funny.
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat looking bird. So sad for the one that looks bald, though. Hope he's okay!
ReplyDeleteThis is a new be for me. Apostle birds I have seen at Carnarvon Gorge and White Cliffs.
ReplyDeleteThe Chouch looks similar to our black birds and crows here in the US. Australia has such interesting birds.
ReplyDeleteThanks for you visit and comment on my foggy pictures.
Scrolled through some previous posts and you've captured such a wide variety of wild birds. All close by where you live?
ReplyDeleteAgree with Carletta that the touch of white on today's entry makes this bird more interesting than other crow-like birds.
Wonderful shots of cute birds.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting us on "Les Fous du Cap". We also like very much your blog and your photos ;-)
ReplyDeleteCéline & Philippe
interesting birds. And, yes the one to the right it seem to be injured.
ReplyDeleteInteresting species. We just have the Common Chough in the UK.
ReplyDeleteNice pictures - I have found these birds hard to photograph - they always seem to be flying into the distance!
ReplyDeleteCheers and thanks for linking to WBW.
Stewart M - Melbourne.
Poor bird if it's hurt by some other bird! Nice to see your Australian crows.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment!
Have a nice weekend! /Pia
Interesting birds. The poor guy on the right looks to be in very poor shape. Hope he pulls through!
ReplyDeleteNice image of a unique bird and very interesting information!
ReplyDeleteMy understanding is this bird is not really the same species as the European Chough?
They do look a bit like crows, don't they? How interesting they use mud to build their nests.
ReplyDeleteThey look like very interesting birds. I do wonder why the feathers are missing on that one's head.
