Went for a quick drive to check out one of the local waterholes today and found this flock of Plumed Whistling-Duck.

Plumed Whistling-Duck (
Dendrocygna eytoni)

Comb-crested Jacana (
Irediparra gallinacea)
You can almost always find Comb-crested Jacana at this spot, even though they might be on the other side of the water like this one was.
Well spotted with that jacana! I know they're around but they always seem to hide when I go looking for them.
ReplyDeleteObviously I have not seen either one of them yet :D
ReplyDeleteThey are great :D
I love those wing feathers on the Plumed Whistling Ducks!
ReplyDeleteNice to have a reliable spot for birds nearby, and great fun to see what runs around loose elsewhere in the world.
ReplyDeleteThanks Snail, Nicole, Idaho Birder and Wren I just wish the Jacana would come a bit closer next time.
ReplyDeleteit is a bit hard to see what the Comb-crested Jacana look like, but it seems similar to our Grebe.
ReplyDeleteThe Plumed Whistling-Duck looks very nice. It does not visit us. Too bad, I would like it.
I would love to see either one of these birds Neil. Those Plumed Whistling Ducks look very art deco.
ReplyDeleteThanks NatureFootstep the Jacana is sometimes called a Lily Trotter because its long toes enable it to walk on the waterlily pads.
ReplyDeleteThanks Larry the wing feathers do stand out.
I love the jacana! How cool. Great spotting. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Lana they are hard to see sometimes just have to keep looking for movement.
