Sacred Kingfisher

On our first ever visit to Stradbroke Island off South East Queensland, we came across this Sacred Kingfisher on the beach as we were helping our daughter with her PHD project.

Note BPW post should read Sacred Kingfisher, not Collared Kingfisher as posted.

Ah, kingfishers --- so gorgeous and so uncooperative. They sit still for ages, then once the camera comes out ... Good catch, esp the action shot!

Very nice mum - you ended up with some good pics of him in the end :)

Thanks Snail and Tarzan for your comments. Turns out not to be Collared but a Sacred instead.

Nice post. The line of beach at 'Straddy' looks great - but also a bit eroded - is that right?

Very much so most of it is taller than I am, and when you are in a 4WD you still have to look up to see the Raptors sitting on the dunes.

Aren't they just wonderful birds? We saw them feasting on tiny crabs on Rainbow Beach.

He is a gorgeous bird...the name definitely fits! I've never been able to capture a nice photo of a kingfisher. They just seem to know when that shutter is about to click...
